star in Best Friends Forever (BFF)
directed by Wenn V. Deramas and co-starring John Estrada. (Star Cinema)

RP’s Megastar, Comedy Queen team up for the first time

REDWOOD CITY, CA, May 14, 2009 – On TFC’s 15th anniversary and Star Cinema’s 16th year, ABS-CBN International’s Starry Starry Store brings to the U.S. the one and only Megastar Sharon Cuneta and the one and only Comedy Queen Ai-Ai Delas Alas come together for the first time in Best Friends Forever (BFF).

The stellar combination, made even brighter by the skillful talents of top comedy director Wenn V. Deramas and excellent scriptwriter Mel Del Rosario, is set to be one of this year’s top-grossing and funniest movie team-ups.

The film revolves around the lives of two women who despite their differences have developed a strong bond that made them commit to become each other’s best friend for life. As the story progresses, the women will be seen falling for a common love interest. One of the country’s most versatile young actors, John Estrada, plays this role. As to how long their friendship would last, only the man who won both their hearts could say.

Off-screen, Sharon and Ai-Ai have very different personalities but they share the same knack for comedy that shines throughout the movie. And as they spend days and nights working on the project, the two became close friends.

Last year, they rocked box office statistics with their respective projects - Sharon in the critically acclaimed Chito Roño masterpiece Caregiver and Ai-Ai in the MMFF runaway winner Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat. Without doubt, BFF will be another winner and blockbuster this year.

This is Sharon’s first venture into comedy after a long, long time, and for Ai-Ai, this is also the first time that her comedy skills will be pitted against one of the best dramatic actresses.

A surprise guest appearance in the film by Gabby Concepcion had the fans shrieking in delight at the very successful movie premiere in Manila last May 12.

“We’re entering the happy season of summer pretty soon, so we wanted to give our viewers a quality comedy full of fun, laughter and star power,” said Kerwin Du, ABS-CBN International’s head of theatricals. “With the Megastar and RP’s Comedy Queen under the direction of comedy master Wenn V. Deramas, expect a laugh-a-minute movie with BFF.”

Don’t buy sex video, city residents urged

Cebu Daily News
First Posted 09:09:00 05/21/2009

CEBU City's moral guardians yesterday called on city residents not to buy the controversial sex video featuring Dr. Hayden Kho and starlet Katrina Halili.

Dr. Rene Josef Bullecer, chairman of the Cebu City Anti-Indecency Board (CAIB) said the city police should monitor video shops to prevent copies of the video from being sold to the public.

He said the video was degrading especially to the women and that parents should keep it out of the hands of their children.

“Let us not add insult to injury. By our own little way, let us police our own ranks”, Bullecer said.

Bullecer voiced support for Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla's call to revoke Kho’s license as a doctor and urged women’s groups to stand up and join the campaign against sex videos.

Despite this, many vendors said a lot of Cebuanos were already looking for copies of the sex scandal.

A female vendor said the copies would arrive in Cebu from Manila today.

“Daghan na kaayo ang nangita. Magbutang nalang mi diri og streamer nga ugma pa moabot (A lot of them are looking for it. We’ll put up a streamer saying it would come tomorrow),” she said.

Another vendor said even policemen and soldiers were looking for it.

However the vendors warned that the video will cost more owing to transportation costs and high demand. /Correspondent Jhunnex Napallacan

DFA protests Alec Baldwin slur

By Cynthia Balana
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Foreign Affairs Wednesday conveyed to Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin the country’s objection to a joke he made in a television show last week about Filipino mail-order brides.

In a letter to Baldwin, Philippine Consul General to New York Cecilia Rebong told the actor that his statement was “derogatory, prejudiced, insensitive and stereotyped Filipino women negatively.”

Baldwin, star of the hit-comedy show “30 Rock” and ex-husband of actress Kim Bassinger, quipped in an interview on the “Late Show with David Letterman” last May 12: “I think about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point or a Russian one, I don’t care, I’m 51.”

Although it was delivered in jest, Baldwin’s remark caused the audience to break into laughter and prompted Letterman, to respond: “Get one for me [also], for later.”

“The general impression given by your statement was that Filipino women can be categorized as easy commodities for sale,” Rebong wrote.

According to Rebong, to label women married to United States nationals as “mail-order brides” simply because they are from overseas, whether from the Philippines or Russia, in particular, was offensive and prejudiced since all foreign nationals married to Americans residing in the US, regardless of how the parties met, have proven the truth of their union.

Rebong also reminded Baldwin that the Philippines was one of the leading countries in the effort to eliminate the trafficking of women and children.

She said that in 1990, Republic Act 6955, “The Anti-Mail-Order Bride Law,” prohibited the commercial trade of Filipino women.

RP immigration bans Baldwin

By Tetch Torres

MANILA, Philippines—The Bureau of Immigration on Thursday banned American actor Alec Baldwin from entering the country for his recent negative comments about Filipino women.

Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan issued the order placing Baldwin in the Immigration blacklist a week after the actor appeared in a television talk show and talked about looking for a Filipina lover via the mail order bride.

By being in the bureau’s blacklist, Baldwin is considered an undesirable alien.

The Immigration chief said Baldwin’s remark is racial and discriminatory.

“I was thinking about getting a Filipina mail-order bride…or a Russian one. I don’t care, I’m 51,” Baldwin said last May 12 in the David Letterman show.

Libanan said Baldwin appears to condone the mail-order bride scheme, which is a criminal act that is prohibited and punishable under Republic Act 6955.

Baldwin apologizes for mail-order bride joke

INQUIRER.net
First Posted 15:41:00 05/21/2009

MANILA, Philippines—American actor Alec Baldwin has apologized to Filipinos who were offended by his mail-order bride joke.

In his blog, the star of 30 Rock admitted that his reference to the Filipina mail-order bride is “dated.”

“While on the David Letterman program, I joked that I might need a ‘mail-order bride’ to achieve the goal of having more children in my life. I believe that most people understood that this was a joke and took it as such. (A dated reference, no doubt, and another sign of my advancing age),” he said.

At the same time, he said he plans to raise some money against child sex slavery and exploitation through an organization that was introduced to him by his brother Stephen.

Baldwin said the adverse reaction by the Philippine government and some politicians to his joke is understandable.

“Such anger and frustration about the issue of sex trafficking is understandable. The Philippines has suffered significant problems with the issue of sex trafficking,” he said.

Katrina asks PRC: Revoke Dr. Kho’s license

MANILA, Philippines -- Actress Katrina Halili asked the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Thursday to revoke the license of Doctor Hayden Kho, saying the latter is a disgrace to the medical profession.

Halili filed administrative complaint for immorality, dishonorable and/or unethical conduct against Kho, who is said to be her ex-lover.

In her complaint, Halili accused Kho of being the one who set up the hidden camera which recorded their intimate moments together without her knowledge.

The sex videos were leaked on the Internet. Copies are purportedly being sold to video pirates.

"He [Kho] is no longer fit to enjoy the privileges of the profession of medicine," Halili said in her complaint.

NBI summons 3 doctors, including Kho, Belo

MANILA, Philippines -- The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has sent out subpoenas to three people, including beauty doctors Hayden Kho and Vicky Belo, in connection with the agency’s investigation into the sex video of Kho and actress Katrina Halili.

Aside from Kho and Belo, who are former lovers, the NBI also subpoenaed a certain Doctor Eric Johnston Chua, NBI Anti-Fraud and Computer Crimes Division (AFCCD) head Vicente De Guzman said.

“We will be inviting all personalities mentioned by Ms. Halili in her statement as well as other personalities whose names would surface in connection with this case,” De Guzman said, adding that summonses to the other “victims” would come later with the probe “focused on the case of Halili.”

The NBI-AFCCD chief pointed out that the initial charge against Kho and other persons found to have been responsible for the proliferation of the sex video could be violation of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence against Women and Children Act of 2004.

“We will look into other cases that could possibly be filed,” De Guzman said, but added that laws on cyber crimes in the country were virtually inexistent.

“We have no laws on cyber crime, particularly against pornography. But the punishment and penalty provided under RA 9262 are heavy enough,” he said.

He also said that the bureau would seek the help of the maintainers of the website, where Kho and Halili’s sex video was posted, to determine who was responsible for uploading the video.

Upset in 'Idol' finale after culture clash

Agence France-Presse
First Posted 11:10:00 05/21/2009

LOS ANGELES--The finale of US television's reality show "American Idol" ended in a shock upset Wednesday as a clean-cut underdog defeated a glam-rocker seen as the overwhelming favorite.

In a result that stunned viewers of the singing contest that has become a pop-culture phenomenon, Kris Allen, a 23-year-old from Arkansas edged out Adam Lambert, a quirky, make-up-wearing actor-singer from California.

US media had hyped the showdown as a smackdown between contestants from conservative "red states" in the shape of Allen, versus the liberal attitudes of "blue states" personified by the flamboyant Lambert.

An estimated 100 million viewers dialed in votes to settle the contest following a special on Tuesday where both singers performed a series of songs.

Wednesday's finale saw guest performances from stars such as Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, Carlos Santana and the Black Eyed Peas.

Allen went back to his country roots in a performance alongside Keith Urban while Lambert reveled in the opportunity to play alongside Kiss.

Just before the results were announced, the two finalists sang together in a performance of Queen's anthem "We Are the Champions."

Yet while it was Lambert who had been expected to be crowned champion, it was college student Allen who walked with the prize that will see him given a recording contract.

The show's panel of four judges had appeared to be leaning towards Lambert in Tuesday's show, with notoriously critical Briton Simon Cowell unusually effusive in his praise of the 27-year-old from San Diego.

"The whole point of doing a show like this is that you hope you can find a worldwide star and I genuinely believe with all my heart that we have found that with you," Cowell told the singer.

"American Idol" was exported to the United States from Britain in 2002, quickly establishing itself as a television ratings giant.

The program aims to unearth the next big singing talent and past contestants such as Carrie Underwood and Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson have gone on to forge successful careers in the entertainment industry.

MANILA, Philippines—Contrary to rumors, Baron Geisler is not moving to GMA 7. “I think ipapahiram lang ako ng ABS,” he clarifies, “to do some episodes of a drama special, ‘SRO Cinemaserye’ yata.”

Doesn’t he feel pressured to outdo himself after reaping awards for his superb performance in Jay? “Not at all, because I love my job,” he says. “Awards are really a bonus.”

And just like his career, Baron’s love life is in full bloom. “Tinamaan talaga ako kay Rachel (Stephenson),” he tells us. “I hadn’t felt this way since my relationship with Jodi (Sta. Maria). Even if Chelz lives in Australia, we chat online for hours daily. Thank God for webcams (laughs)! And we visit each other monthly. It’s hard to have a long distance relationship. Sipag at tiyaga lang dapat. Our sweet reunions make the long wait worth it.”

Looks like the barfly in Baron would need less alcohol now that he’s intoxicated with love!

MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE 2) Controversial cosmetic surgeon Dr. Hayden Kho has been placed on the Bureau of Immigration watch list after sexy actress Katrina Halili filed a complaint against him over video clips that spread on the Internet showing their escapades.

Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said Kho was placed on a hold departure list on orders of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez.

“Once he return, we will immediately report it to the Department of Justice,” Libanan said.

A video supposedly of Kho and Halili having sex got posted on pornographic websites on the Internet. Videos showing steamy dance scenes of the two have been uploaded on the popular video-sharing site YouTube.

Gonzalez ordered the BI to place Kho on its watch list “to prevent his leaving the country and to ensure his presence in the ongoing investigation.”

Gonzalez said the watch list could cause the immigration authorities to bar Kho from leaving the country for 60 days.

“He can be stopped from leaving and we can impose conditions if we will eventually allow him,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez instructed the National Bureau of Investigation to look into Kho’s possible violation of the Violence Against Women and Children Act provision against treating women and children as sex objects, forcing them to commit indecent acts and making films of them.

He said Senator Ramon Revilla, Jr., requested the DOJ to look into the matter of Kho’s sex videos and to place the doctor on the immigration watch list.

“He can be charged under RA 9262 (the VAWC law). There’s a specific provision,” Gonzalez said.

“Under Section 3, treating a woman or a child as a sex object… or forcing a woman the woman or a child to do indecent acts and or make films thereof,” he added.

Gonzalez said the persons behind the production of the video and its proliferation may be held liable either as accessories or accomplices in the commission of the crime.

He said those behind the video should seek professional help.

“Even the one who is instrumental for doing that should have probably to undergo some psychological (treatment),” Gonzalez said.

“Just what do you get out of that? To prove your manhood? Or are you an exhibitionist?” he added.

Asked whether he thought Kho should be stripped of his license, Gonzalez said: “Well, that’s unprofessional conduct.”

ASIA Agcaoili and Dutch boyfriend Michael Seligman, with baby Alexander

MANILA, Philippines—Former Viva Hot Babe Asia Agcaoili has now turned into one hot mama. She gave birth to Alexander last April 20 at the Slotervaart Ziekenhuis in Amsterdam where she’s based with her Dutch BF Michael Seligman. Asia’s heart has found its home in Europe. Wrote Asia:

Hi Dolly,

Being a brand new mom is a whole new experience. After my delivery and the sleepless nights of feeding time and figuring out what causes each cry, I have much respect for all the moms out there. It is a full time job and I’m glad to belong in the “mom” category. He’s so adorable!

I think posing sexy is still possible. I still stand by my belief that if you have the body, flaunt it. I’m glad after three weeks of giving birth, I’m back to my old size. Thank God! Belated Happy Mother’s Day. Now I know what that means.

Love,
Asia

Katrina Halili: Hayden Kho will pay

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Katrina Halili said she would make beauty doctor Hayden Kho pay over the release of a video of their intimate moments on the Internet so that other women will not suffer the same fate.

“Dapat magbayad siya. Para hindi na gawin ng ibang lalaki sa amin, sa mga babae para wala nang mabiktima [He should pay so that men will not do the same to other women, so that there will be no more victims],” Halili told reporters as she was leaving the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

“Hindi ako uurong. Napakawalnghiya niya. Hindi ko sila uurungan [I will not back down. He has no shame. There’s no turning back],” she said.

Halili sought the help of the NBI to determine what case could be filed against Kho.

“Gusto ko nang lumaban kasi ayoko nang maulit ang mga pangyayari, sobrang pambababoy [I want to fight back. I don’t want this humiliation to happen again],” she said.

“Hinaharap ko itong kahihiyang ito para lang matapos na… Ayaw ko nang maulit sa akin ito, kasi kahit anong ingat, kung may lalaking intensiyon nilang gawin yun [I am facing this scandal to get this over with… I don’t want this to happen to me again. Now matter how careful you are, some men are determined to do it],” she said.

In a privilege speech on Thursday, Senator Ramon Revilla Jr., sought the revocation of Kho’s license as he decried the release of the doctor’s sex video with Halili.

PETITION For Katrina Halili

At first I was just laughing at Katrina Halili and Hayden's Careless Whisper Video because they were just dancing there and it's not the scandal I am expecting to see. And for me I think there was nothing malicious about it, tho for sure for other's it is something malicious since they were only wearing underwears. Since during the Careless Whisper Video they were still lovers, I think it's just normal that after or before the video something more than it had happened.

There were 3 Videos that features Katrina Halili and Dr. Hayden Kho. But after I watched the real sex scandal, well that was way too foul to do. It is obviously shown in the video that Katrina Halili doesn't know that there was a video running during that moment. It was Hayden Kho who obviously set up everything.. So much for a PUBLICITY Dr. Hayden Kho... i think your title doesn't fit you.. it should be Hayden Kho now.. you're just like any other maniacs...

I pity Katrina Halili for the issues that she is having now, the sex scandal, the trauma it caused her.. everything...

How could a lover like Kho do that to Katrina Halili... it just shows that he really didn't love Katrina at all, he did not have respect for Katrina and her womanity.

And according to Katrina, Kho stated that "It was just for fun.." after the scandal that Kho let the world know.. yeah you've just proven that you were really just having fun even if Katrina loved you..

haayyysss.. Katrina hold on! you can get through this, do not think that everything thinks that you're a slut or what... be strong and stand firm for these will end in time...

As a woman I would like to make a petition that Y O U who have the "Sex scandal" please stop forwarding it or making business out of it. Tell me that I am being OA, it's okay.. I am just trying to help out a woman abused... POV

MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said controversial cosmetic surgeon Dr. Hayden Kho could be jailed for six years or more if found guilty of violating the laws against women.

Gonzalez made the statement following a visit to the National Bureau of Investigation of sexy starlet Kristina Halili, whose videos showing steamy dance scenes with Kho appeared on the Internet, including on the popular video-sharing site YouTube.

Kho could be charged for violation of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act, said Gonzalez.

If convicted, Kho could be imprisoned for six years or more, he said.

Revilla asked the NBI to investigate the Halili-Kho video scandal to determine who should be held responsible for the filming and dissemination of video clips without the actress’ consent.

Several other women’s trysts with Kho have also been disseminated through the Internet.

Senator Ramon Revilla Jr. on the Senate floor Tuesday called Kho a “maniac” and "pervert of the highest order" and demanded that the surgeon be stripped of his professional license.

Kho was drawn into the showbiz circuit by beauty care expert, Dr. Vicky Belo. They broke up months ago when Belo discovered his flings through the video clips in his computer. The video clips somehow got into the Internet just a few days ago, after Belo admitted she had reconciled with Kho. With Tina G. Santos, Philippine Daily Inquirer

Startalk: Katrina Halili, napaiyak nang sagutin ang tungkol sa sexy video

Katrina Halili, iwas muna sa limelight

One after the other lumabas ang mga sexy video ni Katrina Halili with former flame Hayden Kho. Marami na ang nagsalita, pero why is Katrina herself keeping quiet? Text by Jason John S. Lim. Interview by Connie M. Tungul. Photo by Mitch S. Mauricio.stars

Never nag-deny si Katrina Halili sa mga issue na totoong may kinalaman siya. At ngayong sunud-sunod ang mga intriga after the online release of some sensitive footage, she talks exclusively with iGMA about what she’s been doing amidst all the controversy.

"Heto po, pagod sa paglilipat ng mga gamit." sagot ni Katrina nang kinamusta namin siya last May 19.

She mentioned in a previous interview that she's planning on having her own spa sa kanyang bahay. "Hindi pa kami tapos maglipat ng mga stuff ko," she explains. "Nauna na 'yung mga importante, 'yung mga regular na ginagamit namin sa house, plus 'yung mga slimming machines."

This is her way of keeping busy habang wala pa siyang kasunod na project though she still has event appearances. "Later aalis ako, may ribbon-cutting sa province." And it is also her way para ma-divert ang attention niya away from the hot issues na lumabas kasama ng kanyang videos with Hayden Kho.

"Kinuwento lang po sa akin ng mga kaibigan ko," she says of the reactions ng mga tao sa kanyang videos. "'Di ko na muna pinapansin ‘yan. Dina-divert ko na lang ang attention ko sa pagta-transfer namin dito sa new house."

Ang mahalaga naman, stresses Katrina, is that she still has the support of her family and friends. "Supportive pa rin sila sa nangyari--siyempre alam naman nila kung anong napagdadaanan ko ngayon." And she says she plans on staying out of the limelight in the meantime. "Dito lang ako sa house ‘pag walang guestings or out-of-town projects."

PNP willing to help Katrina Halili

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday expressed support for embattled actress Katrina Halili in her fight against her former lover, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Hayden Kho, and the spread of videos of their intimate moments in both cyberspace and local pirated DVD stalls.

“The PNP will offer or give assistance to those in need of investigation, those who are filing complaints, and those who are in need of security,” PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa said in an interview.

At the same time, Verzosa said the PNP would be coordinating closely with the Optical Media Board in the possible confiscation of pirated DVDs showing Kho’s steamy scenes with Halili and another woman sold in underground markets.

Although no request for security has been made by Halili’s camp, Verzosa said they were willing to provide if the situation calls for it.

“The PNP will attend to any concern or complaint. We do not discriminate. If there is a complaint we investigate, and if there is a request for security and request for investigation, we will investigate,” Verzosa said.

Public attention has been focused on Halili after sex videos showing her with Kho spread this week. Halili has since sought the help of Senator Ramon Revilla Jr. and the National Bureau of Investigation on the matter.

Allwine, voice of Mickey Mouse for 32 years, dies

The Walt Disney Co. says Allwine died Monday of complications from diabetes, with Russi Taylor, his wife of 20 years and the voice of Minnie Mouse, by his side. He was 62.

"Wayne dedicated his entire professional life to Disney," chief executive Robert Iger said in a statement Wednesday. "Over the last 32 years, (he) gave so much joy, happiness and comfort to so many around the world by giving voice to our most beloved, iconic character, Mickey Mouse."

A Southern California native, Allwine joined Disney in 1966 when he took a job in the mail room. He went on to work in the sound effects department and began voicing the company's main mouse in 1977.

His falsetto can be heard in 1983's "Mickey's Christmas Carol," 1988's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and at Disney theme parks around the world. He won an Emmy Award in 1986 for his sound editing on the NBC series "Amazing Stories."

Allwine was the third man behind Mickey's voice. The first was Disney himself, then Jimmy MacDonald, who became Allwine's mentor and passed him the reins after voicing the mouse for 30 years.

"He said, 'Just remember kid, you're only filling in for the boss,'" Allwine once recalled. "And that's the way he treated doing Mickey for years and years."

"Mickey's the real star," Allwine continued. "You know you just have to love the little guy while you have him, because he won't be yours forever."

Roy E. Disney, director emeritus for The Walt Disney Co., said Allwine did more than give Mickey a voice. He "gave him a heart and soul as well."

"He did an incredible job of bringing emotion, humor and appeal to the character, and superbly carried on the tradition originated by my Uncle Walt, and later by sound-effects wizard Jimmy Macdonald."

Besides Taylor, Allwine is survived by five children from a previous marriage: Erin, Alison, Peter, Christopher and Joshua.

Making their much-awaited arrival to the red carpet, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt attended the Cannes Film Festival premiere of "Inglourious Basterds" in Cannes, France on Wednesday (May 20).

The lovely couple happily posed for event photographers upon arrival, mingling with fellow co-stars and guests as they prepared for their big night in southern France.

As for his new movie, the "Fight Club" stud can barely recall agreeing to take part in the Quentin Tarantino directed WWII film.

“Quentin came to visit some time at the end of the summer, we talked about backstory, we talked about movies,” Pitt, 45, said. “I get up the next morning and see five empty bottles of wine right on the floor. Five."

"And something that resembles a smoking apparatus. I don’t know what that was about -– and apparently I had agreed to do this film," Brad continues. "Six weeks later I was in uniform, and I was Lieutenant Aldo Raine.”

Kidney transplant successful for Natalie Cole

AP – FILE - In this Feb. 8, 2009 file photo,
Natalie Cole is shown backstage at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards …

LOS ANGELES – Ailing Natalie Cole now has a new kidney.

The 59-year-old singer underwent successful kidney transplant surgery "and is resting comfortably," publicist Maureen O'Connor said Wednesday. Cole will postpone her summer tour, which was set to begin June 5 and run through November, as she recovers.

Cole had been receiving dialysis three times a week since September. She still continued to perform, even overseas, in support of her latest album, the Grammy-winning "Still Unforgettable,"

The kidney dialysis is unrelated to Cole's struggle with hepatitis C, a liver disease spread through contact with infected blood. She announced her hepatitis diagnosis last year and said that the disease was likely caused by her drug use years ago.

Cole received painful chemotherapy to treat the hepatitis and "within four months, I had kidney failure," she told Larry King on his CNN show last month. Without a donor, she would need dialysis for the rest of her life, she said.

After her appearance on King, she received countless letters from people offering to give her a kidney. But a regional organ-procurement agency, One Legacy, found a kidney for her.

Cole has sold millions of records and won nine Grammys since she made her recording debut in 1975. The daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole had her greatest success with the 1991 CD "Unforgettable ... With Love," which paid tribute to her late father with reworked versions of some of his best-known songs.

She won her ninth Grammy in February for "Still Unforgettable," on which she also sings jazz standards. She recently performed on "American Idol" and was gearing up for her tour.

"I'm committed to working. I'm a fighter, not a chump," she said in an interview with People last year. "The timing is intense. The album is special to me, and here I am sick. But you know the saying: These are the best of times and the worst of times. So we'll barrel through."

American Idol Has a Winner

Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, Ryan Seacrest, American Idol
Ray Mickshaw/FOX

Booo!

No, we aren't protesting which deserving-in-his-own-way finalist ultimately won. We're just bummed that American Idol is over for the year.

After two hours of duets, surprise guests, a few ghosts of auditions past and plenty of good cheer—not to mention 16 weeks of sweat, tears and song—a new champion was crowned Wednesday to cap off the eighth season of the most-watched show on TV.

On one side, 27-year-old Adam Lambert, the polished (and we don't just mean his nails), mascara'd, perfectly poised arena-ready rocker with the infinite range.

And, on the other, 23-year-old Kris Allen, somewhat of a dark-horse contestant, despite his universally appealing cutie-pie looks and radio-friendly warble.

But though history has shown us that both guys are probably due for bigger and less clichéd things, only one ended up in that solo spotlight tonight, clutching the brand-new Idol microphone trophy.

Kris Allen, American Idol Frank Micelotta / FOX

And after a record 100 million votes were cast, it was Kris Allen who was left standing in hand-over-mouth shock 'n' awe because he had found out that he was the next American Idol.

"It feels good, man, but Adam deserves this," the Conway, Ark., native protested. "I don't know what to feel right now, this is crazy."

So that's what utter disbelief sounds like.

"Ah, I don't even know," Allen stuttered as Ryan Seacrest handed over the championship trophy. "Thank you—you guys are the reason that all of us are here," he told the audience.

The still-smiling Lambert, the consummate pro already, stepped up to give his compatriot a congratulatory hug, as Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi applauded in...well, in surprise. (By the way, they stood up. Simon Cowell didn't.)

But before we leave you to hash this out among yourselves, here's a quick run-down of some of the high points from the eighth-season finale:

• Adam and Kris dueting on Queen's "We Are the Champions." Cuz really, they are, aren't they?

Megan Joy and Michael Sarver singing the Steve Martin-penned "Pretty Flowers," accompanied by Martin and his banjo. 'Nuf said. When asked by Ryan who he thought was going to win, Martin said, "I know it's a long shot, but I'm hoping I do."

David Cook, American Idol Ray Mickshaw/FOX

• A subdued David Cook stopping by to perform "Permanent," off of his upcoming debut album, which the emotional rocker sang "to honor not only my brother, but everybody who has had to deal with something like this." Cook's older brother, Adam, lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this month. The video of the performance will be available on iTunes, with all proceeds going to cancer-research charity ABC2 (Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure).

Danny Gokey being paired with Lionel Richie. Sure, Danny was saddled with "Hello," which was one of Cook's shining moments last year. But at least it sounded really good.

• Kris and Keith Urban. That's about right.

And some of the lows:

• The Top 13 reuniting for Pink's "So What" in those all-white outfits the dozen (this year, a baker's dozen) have to wear each season. This is what the gates of heaven must be like when you're being informed that you took a wrong turn at the celestial escalator.

American Idol Top 13 Ray Mickshaw/FOX

• Just when we thought the mass "na-na-na-na na-na-na" was freaky enough, there were the top seven guys—all clad in Reservoir Dog suits— coming at us, inquiring "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." (The eventual arrival of Rod Stewart helped a bit.)

• Adam (sporting some studded, wire-wing epaulet-thingies) getting matched with KISS for his big duet. Where's Bowie when you need him?

• The Top 13 reuniting yet again for "Smooth," which it wasn't. We tried to focus on Santana's guitar playing in the meantime.

A tie for both high and low:

• A bikini (and shirt-dress)-clad Kara joining Katrina "Bikini Girl" Darrell on Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love." Yes, Kara can hold her own in a bikini. But wouldn't it have better proved Kara's point if the two had never made peace?

What a season, eh? Could you be more surprised? Or did you know that Kris had it in him all along?

David disappoints, David delights

By JOJO P. PANALIGAN
May 18, 2009, 4:53pm

“American Idol” champion David Cook disgruntled some of his Filipino fans by excluding “The Time Of My Life” in his Manila concert set list last May 16.

“The Time Of My Life” was the coronation song of “American Idol” Season 7 which Cook won. The song went as high as number three in the US Billboard charts and became an even bigger hit in Canada (#2) and in the Philippines (#1).

Instead, Cook performed a barrage of unreleased tracks from his self-titled album that left the crowd lethargic. Songs from “Analog Heart,” an album he released during his pre-“Idol” days, made the crowd even more listless.

“We’re playing songs you’ve never heard before,” Cook explained, noticing the lull. “Is that okay?”
The only familiar songs from Cook that night were “Light On” (first single off “Cook”) and his remake of “Always Be My Baby” (originally by Mariah Carey).

“Little Lies” (Fleetwood Mac), although a charter in the US back in the 80s, received little airplay in the Philippines, thus, was hardly recognized when Cook performed it.

The rock singer opened his set somberly with just a guitar accompanying him in “The World I Know;” perhaps in honor of his brother, Adam, who died of brain cancer in March.

At one point, the “Idol” champ mingled with the audience and took a picture of himself using the camera of a fan.

He asked for a show of hands of those who bought his album. Cook, however, must have been let down when the audience couldn’t sing along.

“You guys are still having a good time…right?” he’d check on the crowd from time to time.

To catch the audience’s attention, the singer uttered the Filipino words “Salamat!” and “Magandang gabi!”

“I hope I didn’t butcher ‘em,” he said good-naturedly.

His latest single, “Come Back To Me,” Cook dedicated to newly weds. His doing so had some people scratching their heads.

Part of “Come Back To Me,” after all, goes, “You say you’re leaving as you look away/I know there’s really nothing left to say…”

Cook only gave an encore. Few fans shouted for more the second time he left the stage. Many were more interested in leaving The Mall of Asia Concert Grounds as fast they could to beat the expected traffic jam.

“American Idol” Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta served up a more balanced repertoire.

Although with fewer hit songs (two to Cook’s three), Archuleta was able to keep the audience interested by peppering his set list with four remakes: “Stand By Me” (Ben E King), “Angel” (Robbie Williams), “A Thousand Miles” (Vanessa Carlton) and a snippet of “Beautiful Girl” (Sean Kingston).

The remakes were performed successively at the latter part of the show, thus, establishing a sense of climax. Archuleta also wisely alternated between fast and slow songs instead of a stream of songs that had the same time signature and arrangement.

Archuleta was all over the stage. That’s why after doing certain fast numbers, he would reach for his bottled water and drink which, oddly enough, earned hoots of approval from the audience.

He also accompanied himself on the piano in some songs (e.g. “To Be With You”) and even whistled the instrumental hook in “Your Eyes Don’t Lie.”

The 18-year-old singer had some breathing issues in a couple of the fast numbers. Nevertheless, he was pitch-perfect in most and he was able to reach the high notes especially in “A Little Too Not Over You” and “Crush.”

Other songs that Archuleta performed were “You Can,” “Barriers,” “Don’t Let Go,” “Zero Gravity” and “Waiting For Yesterday.”

Billy flirts with Nikki during Miss Earth Pageant

By JUDE L. BAUTISTA
May 19, 2009, 8:17am

There seemed to be a genuine chemistry between co-hosts Billy Crawford and Nikki Gil during

the Miss Earth Philippines Pageant. Crawford complimented his co-host almost a dozen ti

mes both on and off cam, always using the microphone. There have been rumors that the two are seriously dating but both are quiet about their personal lives.

They seem to be a perfect pair in terms of age and accomplishment. Nikki Gil recently graduated from the Ateneo De Manila University with a degree in English Literature. World Vision, a n

on-government organization that provides scholarships to deserving underprivileged students gave their endorser Nikki a huge graduation party. Lea Salonga was the surprise guest.

Billy Crawford on the other hand is the official Virlanie foundation spokesperson. Virlanie provides a home and caring family environment for street children. Crawford’s fluency in French was put into use when he welcomed Jean Beliveau, a Canadian who walks the world for peace. Billy and Nikki were all smiles throughout the Miss Earth Philippines pageant. Even off cam, their antics and knowing looks went on.

Sandra Seifert representing Negros Occidental captured the Miss Earth title and also won two Special Awards: Best in Swimsuit and Best in Cultural Attire. Province mate Adie Adelantar of Victoria City won the Miss Eco Tourism and Miss PAGCOR 2009 title.

Adie is a sought after ramp model often seen in the prestigious Fashion Watch Quartet Series of Shangri-La Makati. Adie bears a striking resemblance to Angel Locsin. Moments before Sandra was declared Miss Earth Phil., Adie raised both their arms in triumph mimicking Locsin’s Rexona TV commercial. The gesture showed that Adie felt grateful and a winner no matter what the outcome.

Each of the top five finalists has titles of their own. Patricia Marie Tumulak (Quezon City) won the Miss Fire/Miss Science and Technology titles. Michelle Martha Braun (Aklan) is Miss Phil. Air while Catherine Loyola is Miss Phil. Water. Loyola represented the Filipino community in Sydney, Australia. Tessa Kruger who represented the Filipino Community in Canada won the Best in Gown Award and made it to the top 10. Other special awards belonged to: Jane Annalyn Sy (Cainta) – Miss Photogenic, Kirstie Joan Babor (Alegria) – Miss Congeniality, Angelee Delos Reyes (Olongapo) – Miss Talent. Another top 10 finalist, Alexis S. Go of Manila, has the features of Kim Chiu.

The competition is open to the representatives of provinces, cities and municipalities. This is the second year in a row that overseas Filipino communities also participated. Melbourne, the (US) West Coast also sent representatives. The Philippine candidate last year, Karla Paula Henry, won it all to capture the title of Miss Earth 2008. She has traveled around the country to lead tree planting and coastal clean up activities organized by the Miss Earth Foundation.

There was no shortage of beauty queens among the judges. Precious Lara Quigaman was Miss International 2005. Ginger Conejero was Miss Phil. Air 2006 and is now with “TV Patrol” and “ANC Mornings.” Cindy Ejercito was Mutya Ng Asia Pacific 1988 and is the first Lady of San Juan.

A surprise ceremony honoring Joji Felix Velarde, one of the Miss Earth founders, was also held. Velarde, a former beauty queen herself, also became a ballerina and film actress. As a model, she was one of the first Filipinas to work in Europe and was the first to open the Lincoln Center in New York. Carousel Pres. Ramon Monzon described her as “a stabilizing force for our organization.” Velarde said, “You shouldn’t give me an award but it should be for the city of San Juan for building this wonderful Flying V Arena and supporting our pageant.”

It was televised locally by ABS-CBN 2 and abroad through the Filipino Channel. Sponsors include: PAGCOR, Karilagan Travel & Tours Corp., Ricky Reyes the official make up and hairstylist, PLDT MyDSL Plan 990, Cocolife, Dairicreme, Air 21, Everbilena and Alberto Shoes.

tv interview with candy pangilinan...

Here's a tv interview with candy pangilinan asking an apology to all Igorots who got offended by her joke.

Candy Pangilinan apologizes to all Igorots

By SHIRLEY MATIAS PIZARRO
May 15, 2009, 1:29pm

In the recent Mothers’ Day weekend, comedienne Candy Pangilinan didn’t feel pampered nor cherished just like most of us mommies felt on that day.

The reason was she had been working, and working real hard. It’s an open secret that Candy is a single mom and has been doing a good job raising her child as such.

Unfortunately, she got embroiled in a “scandalous” situation after she carelessly mouthed the lines “Akala niyo Igorot ako ano? Tao po ako,” attempting to throw a punchline during the show at SM Baguio.

Angeli Pangilinan Valenciano, Candy’s manager, said the comedienne failed to say “statue” instead of “Igorot.” But the repercussion was instantaneous. In this day and age of computers, internet and facebook, the “mistake” caused an uproar in the internet.

Angeli said Candy “was insulted, cursed, and called a racial murderer.” Candy, needless to say, feels so bad about the whole thing. “She had been crying and crying and was truly sorry for the lapse.”
Anyway, Angeli sent us Candy’s apology letter and we’re printing it here in full to appease those who may have been offended.

“Last Saturday, May 9, the day after my birthday, I had finished taping at 8 a.m. and left Manila to fulfill a commitment in Baguio at 2 p.m. I am truly sorry because I uttered an insensitive statement during the event. I did not mean to hurt anyone, especially, our Igorot brothers and sisters.

It was a careless remark and for that I am truly sorry. The harm was done and regardless of what explanation I give and whatever my intention was when I uttered such words, any defense would not matter at this point. I was wrong. I clearly remember that I did apologize for the careless statement I said during the show.

Comedians have a tendency to go overboard and say the wrong things to catch those punchlines and sometimes, one can get reckless. Truly I am sorry for my mistake. I have learned a precious lesson and I am sorry that I had to hurt people in the process.

I sincerely wanted to be a part of the community and delivered the lines correctly. I had no sleep that day and was very tired. In all of my shows I try to make it a point to let my audiences feel that I am a part of and one with them. If you were there and had finished the show, you would have heard me acknowledge my mistake.

I apologized and explained myself. I even went on to uplift the Benguet/Igorot Community. I am very proud of their contribution to society. I, as a person and a Filipino would never intentionally discriminate nor disrespect my roots, my ancestors, and my fellow Filipinos. In summary I pray that people would realize that I do not look down on anyone of a different race, heritage, or religion.

Again, I am deeply sorry. I hope that you can find it in your hearts to forgive me though it may be difficult to understand why I did it. There are certain things we regret saying in our life, and this was one major error! And may the Lord Jesus Christ forgive me and release me from such a major blunder.”

Sincerely, Candy Pangilinan.

Baldwin's mail-order bride joke has Filipino senator fuming

Alec Baldwin made the mail-order bride joke last week in reference to his troubles with ex-wife Kim Basinger. A Filipino senator counters that the practice is illegal there.
By Evan Agostini, AP
Alec Baldwin made the mail-order bride joke last week in reference to his troubles with ex-wife Kim Basinger. A Filipino senator counters that the practice is illegal there.

MANILA — Alec Baldwin's joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying Monday that the 30 Rock star faces violence if he ever visits.

Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on The Late Show with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.

The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was "thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point ... or a Russian one."

Baldwin has been involved in a bitter dispute with his ex-wife, Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger, over custody of their 13-year-old daughter, Ireland.

Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said Monday that Baldwin's comment was "insensitive and uncalled for" and an insult to millions of Filipinos.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: Philippines | David Letterman | Kim Basinger

He called the actor "arrogant" and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides.

"Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he'll see mayhem," Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.

The senator is a former action-movie star who occasionally still appears on Philippine TV.

Mr. Harrison isn't going to Washington; Steeler spurns Obama

On Thursday, President Obama will welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers to the White House to honor the team for its recent Super Bowl victory. But, just like in 2006 when the Steelers had a post-title meeting with George W. Bush, defensive MVP (and Super Bowl hero) James Harrison won't be in attendance. But he has a good reason:

"This is how I feel -- if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don't win the Super Bowl. As far as I'm concerned, he [Obama] would've invited Arizona if they had won."

Usually, when a sentence begins with "as far as I'm concerned," it ends with an opinion, not an incontrovertible fact. Harrison's comment is akin to saying, "As far as I'm concerned, George Washington was the first president."

Of course the Cards would have received the White House invite if they had won. Winners get to go meet the president, losers don't. They also get the trophy, the parade and those hats that say "Super Bowl champs". I don't think James Harrison(notes) turned down any of those things, which makes his refusal to go to the White House a tad hypocritical.

When Harrison won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award, he didn't decline and say, "As far as he was concerned, they would've given this award to someone else if they had had a better defensive season." And when he scored that touchdown in the Super Bowl after returning an interception 100 yards, I'm pretty sure Harrison didn't tell the ref to take the points of the board because, as far as he was concerned, if Larry Fitzgerald(notes) had caught him, he wouldn't have scored.

As far as I'm concerned, James Harrison is sort of a fool. If he doesn't want to go to the White House, fine. (Although I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't want to meet the President of the United States.) But don't make a lame excuse in an attempt to justify your decision. Leave that for NFL refeeres.

Thanks, Fanhouse
